The airline has placed an order for 500 planes from the Airbus A320 family.
On June 19, IndiGo, India’s largest airline by market share, made a historic purchase agreement by ordering 500 Airbus A320 Family aircraft. Valued at $50 billion at list prices, the delivery of these planes is scheduled between 2030 and 2035. However, the actual cost is expected to be significantly lower due to discounts typically offered for large orders.
The order consists of a combination of A320 neo, A321 neo, and A321 xlr aircraft. The selection of engines and the specific mix of A320 and A321 models will be determined later, according to IndiGo.
Currently operating over 300 aircraft, IndiGo has additional orders for 480 aircraft, which are slated for delivery by the end of 2030. With the new order of 500 aircraft, the airline’s order book reaches nearly 1,000 aircraft for the next decade.
The purchase agreement was signed at the Paris Air Show 2023 by key representatives, including Rahul Bhatia (Promoter & Managing Director of IndiGo), Venkataramani Sumantran (Chairman and Non-Executive Independent Director of IndiGo), Pieter Elbers (CEO of IndiGo), Guillaume Faury (Airbus CEO), and Christian Scherer (Airbus Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International).
IndiGo’s significant order is expected to boost economic growth, social cohesion, and mobility in India. With its dominant 61 percent share of the domestic Indian market, IndiGo is poised to maintain its prominence in the Indian aviation industry. The airline aims to expand its international seat share from 23 percent to 30 percent within the next two years and currently serves 26 international destinations and 78 domestic destinations, operating over 1,800 daily flights.
