Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition, has ignited a heated political debate with his recent remarks on the state of religious freedom in India, particularly citing the plight of Sikhs. During a speech to the Indian diaspora in Virginia, USA, Gandhi accused the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of treating certain religions and communities as inferior, focusing specifically on the Sikh community.

Gandhi stated, “The fight (in India) is about whether a Sikh is going to be allowed to wear a turban…whether a Sikh will be allowed to wear a kada or go to the Gurudwara.” He emphasized that this struggle is not limited to Sikhs but extends to all religious groups.

However, Gandhi’s remarks are starkly contrasted by the findings of the 2021 Pew Research Center’s survey on religion in India. According to the survey, Indians across religious backgrounds feel overwhelmingly free to practice their faith. It found that the majority of Indians, regardless of religion, see religious tolerance as a crucial part of the national identity, with 53% believing that India’s diversity is beneficial for the country. Moreover, only 24% of Muslims and 21% of Hindus reported widespread religious discrimination against their communities.

BJP’s Response

Rahul Gandhi’s comments sparked a strong reaction from the BJP. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri condemned the statements, calling them “irresponsible” and demanding an explanation. In an interview with CNN-News18, Puri remarked that he had never encountered any issues related to Sikh religious freedom in India or abroad, questioning where Gandhi was drawing his conclusions from. Puri also highlighted the tragic events of 1984, where over 3,000 Sikhs were killed under the Congress-led government of Gandhi’s father, Rajiv Gandhi, accusing Rahul Gandhi of making “outlandish statements” while abroad.

The ongoing controversy reflects the widening political and ideological divide in India over religious freedom and the role of the RSS, with both parties using history and current narratives to bolster their positions. While Gandhi’s remarks are being seen as a call for greater religious freedom, critics argue that they misrepresent the reality on the ground, as reflected by studies like the Pew Research Center’s.

This incident has not only reignited debates on India’s religious dynamics but also the role of political leaders in shaping the perception of India’s religious tolerance, both at home and abroad.
