The 2025 India–Pakistan standoff, ignited by the tragic Pahalgam attack on April 22, 2025, marked a significant escalation in the decades-long Kashmir conflict. This incident, resulting in the deaths of 26 civilians, predominantly tourists, led to a series of retaliatory actions and diplomatic ruptures between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

Background: The Pahalgam Attack

On April 22, 2025, a terrorist assault occurred in the Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in 26 civilian fatalities and over 20 injuries. The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, initially claimed responsibility, citing opposition to Indian settlement policies in Kashmir. However, they retracted this claim four days later. Eyewitness accounts indicated that the assailants specifically targeted non-Muslim individuals, intensifying communal tensions.

Diplomatic and Military Escalation

In response to the attack, India initiated a series of punitive measures:

  • Suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty: India halted participation in the 1960 treaty, which governs water distribution from the Indus River system, citing Pakistan’s alleged support for cross-border terrorism.
  • Diplomatic Expulsions: Both nations expelled each other’s diplomats, and India withdrew its staff from Islamabad.
  • Border Closures and Visa Cancellations: India closed the Attari–Wagah border and canceled all visas issued to Pakistani nationals.
  • Military Actions: On May 7, India launched “Operation Sindoor,” targeting what it described as terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan. Pakistan responded with “Operation Bunyan al-Marsus,” targeting Indian military bases. Both operations resulted in casualties and infrastructure damage on both sides.

The conflict marked the first instance of drone warfare between the two nations, with both sides claiming to have downed each other’s aircraft. India reported the destruction of several Pakistani airfields, while Pakistan claimed to have shot down multiple Indian fighter jets.

International Mediation and Ceasefire

The escalating conflict drew international concern, with the United Nations and countries like Iran, Russia, and China urging restraint. On May 10, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, effective from 5:00 PM IST. While India officially denied third-party mediation, the U.S. played a significant role in facilitating the cessation of hostilities.

Despite the ceasefire, both nations accused each other of violations. On May 12, military officials from both sides agreed to adhere to a strict ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC), pledging to avoid cross-border firing and reduce troop presence.

Current Status and Future Outlook

As of May 16, 2025, the situation remains tense but stable. Both India and Pakistan have expressed a willingness to engage in peace talks. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif indicated openness to dialogue, signaling a potential shift towards de-escalation.

The conflict has had significant regional and global implications, affecting air travel, trade, and international relations. The suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty has raised concerns about the weaponization of water resources, with India considering projects to divert water from the Indus River system, potentially impacting Pakistan’s agricultural and energy sectors.

The 2025 standoff underscores the fragile nature of peace in South Asia and the urgent need for sustained diplomatic efforts to address underlying issues, particularly the Kashmir dispute, to prevent future conflicts.
