
Harriet Dart and Fran Jones, both British players, had their hopes dashed in the second qualifying round of the French Open on Wednesday.
British number four, Harriet Dart, started strong by winning the first set, but eventually suffered a 1-6 6-1 6-2 defeat against France’s Elsa Jacquemot.
Meanwhile, world number 316, Fran Jones, was left in tears as she had to retire from her match against Ylena In-Albon. Despite her victory over Coco Vandeweghe earlier in the tournament, Jones was trailing 4-1 before her retirement. Jones, who has a congenital condition resulting in missing fingers and toes, was unable to continue due to a shoulder injury at Roland Garros.
In the men’s draw, British number seven Ryan Peniston and Jan Choinski both experienced losses after winning the first set in their respective matches. Peniston took the lead against eighth seed Radu Albot, but Albot rallied back to secure a 2-6 6-2 6-4 victory. Choinski was defeated 3-6 6-4 6-0 by Austria’s Sebastian Ofner.

Katie Boulter and Liam Broady will have their chance to reach the third and final qualifying round later.
The main draw of the French Open, held on clay courts at Roland Garros, is set to commence on Sunday.
In other British tennis news, Heather Watson, Katie Swan, and Lily Miyazaki were eliminated in the first round of qualifying on Tuesday.
It was announced on Wednesday that Great Britain will host their Billie Jean King Cup play-off tie against Sweden in November. The winners of the tie will have the opportunity to qualify for the 2024 Finals, while the losers will be relegated to a regional competition.
Each play-off tie will consist of five matches, with two singles matches on the first day and two singles matches followed by a doubles match on the second day.
The draw for this year’s Finals, taking place in Seville, revealed a challenging group featuring defending champions Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and the United States.
