Our grandparents stood against colonial rule. They sacrificed their youth, their livelihoods, and in many cases their lives so that India could breathe as a free nation. They did not fight merely to replace one ruler with another. They fought so that future generations could speak freely, question authority, and shape their own destiny.

Freedom is not a trophy that is won once and displayed forever. It is a responsibility that every generation must protect.

History reminds us that India has witnessed many struggles. Some resisted the expansion of the Mughal Empire. Others fought against British colonial rule. After Independence, political movements continued to challenge governments, policies, and institutions whenever people believed democracy was under strain. The names of those in power changed, but the principle remained the same: citizens have the right to question those who govern.

Today, many Indians believe that it is once again time to raise their voices. Some are deeply critical of the BJP government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, arguing that dissent is increasingly discouraged, democratic institutions face pressure, and fundamental freedoms deserve stronger protection. Others disagree and support the government’s direction. Such disagreements are part of democracy itself.

The real test of a democracy is not whether everyone agrees. It is whether people can disagree without fear.

Our grandparents did not sacrifice everything so that future generations would remain silent. They fought for a nation where citizens could speak, debate, criticize, and demand accountability from those in power, regardless of which political party formed the government.

Democracy survives only when ordinary people remain vigilant. Every generation inherits not just the benefits of freedom, but also the duty to defend constitutional values, civil liberties, and the right to ask difficult questions.

As the great poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz wrote:

“Bol, ke lab azaad hain tere.”
Speak, for your lips are free.

Those words continue to remind us that freedom of expression is not a privilege granted by any government. It is a cornerstone of a democratic society, and preserving it is the responsibility of every citizen.
